Description

This flavorful Turkey Meatloaf recipe features a tangy ketchup and brown sugar glaze, tender ground turkey mixed with aromatic sautéed onions and garlic, and a blend of spices. Baked to perfection, it’s a comforting and healthier twist on classic meatloaf that’s perfect for family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale

Glaze

  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard

Meatloaf

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1/4 cup of the glaze mixture (from above)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 large eggs
  • 3/4 cup bread crumbs
  • 2 pounds ground turkey

Instructions

  1. Make the Glaze: In a medium bowl, combine ketchup, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, and Dijon mustard. Whisk together until smooth and set aside.
  2. Sauté the Onions and Garlic: Heat olive oil in a small pan over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant. Remove from heat.
  3. Prepare the Meatloaf Mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine 1/4 cup of the prepared glaze, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, paprika, dried thyme, salt, black pepper, and eggs. Whisk to blend. Stir in the sautéed onions and garlic. Add the bread crumbs and ground turkey to the bowl and gently mix using your hands or spatula, being careful not to overwork the meat.
  4. Shape and Glaze the Meatloaf: Transfer the turkey mixture to a greased or parchment-lined baking sheet. Form it into a loaf shape approximately 9 inches long and 4 to 5 inches wide. Brush the remaining glaze evenly over the top of the meatloaf for a flavorful crust.
  5. Bake the Meatloaf: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the meatloaf for 55 to 65 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C) to ensure it is cooked through. Once done, let it rest for 5 to 10 minutes before slicing to retain juices.

Notes

  • Use a meat thermometer to ensure the meatloaf reaches a safe internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).
  • Letting the meatloaf rest after baking helps it retain moisture and makes slicing easier.
  • For extra flavor, consider adding chopped fresh herbs like parsley or chives to the meatloaf mixture.
  • If you prefer a thicker glaze, you can simmer the glaze mixture on low heat until it thickens before using.
  • Substitute ground turkey with ground chicken or lean beef if desired.
